Drug Free Communities Grant

The mission of CADCA (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America) is to strengthen the capacity of community coalitions to create and maintain safe, healthy and drug-free communities globally.  This is accomplished by providing technical assistance and training, public policy advocacy, media strategies and marketing programs, training and special events.  Within our own communities/counties, we have the IMPACT Coalition group.

The IMPACT Coalition addresses substance use in Norman and Mahnomen Counties by assessing the scope of the problem and developing plans to implement sustainable, prevention strategies that will reduce substance use among youth and adults in our local communities.

The IMPACT Coalition has three goals:

  1. Reduce substance abuse among youth and adults by identifying and reducing the risk factors that contribute to substance use and strengthening the factors that protect youth from substance use.
  2. Serve as a forum that will promote collaboration among multiple sectors of local communities.
  3. Develop and/or adopt multiple prevention strategies to address the problem of substance use in our two counties.

The IMPACT Coalition is always looking for more members.  We meet virtually the 4th Tuesday and 4th Thursday of every month at 11:00.  Please feel free to email or call Kelsey or Kim to get more information.  218-784-5425, Kelsey.Merkens@co.norman.mn.us or Kimberly.Myers@co.norman.mn.us

Responsible Beverage Server Training
Responsible alcohol sales businesses are a respected part of our business communities and we appreciate their efforts to help all of us keep alcohol out of the hands of youth. We have two certified trainers on staff to provide FREE training that includes but not limited to the recognition of intoxication; verification of ID's - both false and real; pertinent laws; and strategies for intervention to prevent intoxicated persons from consuming more. Please feel free to email or call Kelsey or Kim to get more information.  218-784-5425, Kelsey.Merkens@co.norman.mn.us or Kimberly.Myers@co.norman.mn.us

Prescription Drug Disposal
Remove the risk and practice safe prescription drug disposal by safely removing unused medications left in the home. Make a monthly habit of checking your medicine cabinet for expired or discontinued medications.  Not properly disposing of unused medications can lead to accidental poisoning and increased risk of medication theft. For more information about prescription drug disposal, check out our Safe Prescription Drug Disposal Brochure.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

According to the Center for Disease and Control (CDC), ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood. ACEs can include violence, abuse, and growing up in a family with mental health or substance use problems. Toxic stress from ACEs can change brain development and affect how the body responds to stress. ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood. However, ACEs can be prevented.  We have two certified trainers on staff to provide outreach/additional information on ACES.  Please feel free to email or call Kelsey or Kim for more information on scheduling a training.  218-784-5425, Kelsey.Merkens@co.norman.mn.us or Kimberly.Myers@co.norman.mn.us
