Opioid Information

What are Opioids?

Prescription opioids are pain medications utilized for severe pain following surgery, serious injury, or other painful disease processes such as cancer. Some examples of prescription opioids include Oxycodone, Percocet, Fentanyl, Dilaudid, and Morphine. Opioids prescribed by a doctor still have a serious risk of addiction and always need to be taken as prescribed. Ask your provider if a non-opioid pain reliever would be appropriate for your condition.

Prescription opioids should always be secured in a locked medicine cabinet, out of the reach of children, and removed from the home as soon as they are no longer needed. Find out more about prescription drug disposal in our Safe Prescription Drug Disposal Brochure.

Opioids may also be sold and used illegally on the street. Fentanyl, while utilized in the medical field, has recently been illegally produced and sold on the street or mixed in with counterfeit medications. Fentanyl is the source of many overdoses, as it is a potent opioid that is 50-100x stronger than morphine (CDC, 2023).
